- ➤ Teen Empowerment helps youth in Rochester speak out about school discipline and build leadership skills after facing many suspensions—teaching them to overcome challenges and get involved in community change. The nonprofit recently expanded its Genesee street site with a $4.3 million upgrade and now hires local teens aged 14 to 19 at $15.50 an hour for hands-on training and advocacy work. Rochester Beacon
- ➤ The Rochester Presbyterian Home marked 100 years of elder care on April 10 with an open house to honor its century-long service in assisted living and memory care. Founded in 1925, the facility has grown to three locations that offer a safe haven for local seniors and a welcoming space for their families. ABC 13

- ➤ On April 7, 2025, just before 4:00 p.m., the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed robbery at M&T Bank near Brockport where a masked man threatened staff and stole $452,600—an employee said she felt nervous as two men were arrested. ABC 13
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Walter Cooper, the University of Rochester’s first Black Chemist, will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the City of Rochester’s Black Heritage Gala on April 12th at 5:30 p.m. at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center—he has spent his life improving housing, education and job opportunities and advising national civil rights leaders. Rochester First

- ➤ Victor teen Jace Carey earned his pilot’s license at 17 after completing 40 hours of flight training while balancing school, sports, and homework — his journey began with a surprise birthday lesson from his parents. He also helped restore a Baby Ace plane with his local Experimental Aircraft Association chapter — a testament to his growing passion for aviation. Rochester First
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Two Rochester universities reported that some international student visas were revoked following new federal immigration policies. RIT confirmed several students were affected while the University of Rochester said five current students and six recent graduates lost their visas — with nine having their records terminated in SEVIS — and the moves were made without prior university communication. - ➤ Senator Kirsten Gillibrand raised concerns over federal funding cuts to TEFAP that may reduce food supplies for food banks including Rochester’s Foodlink. New York may lose up to 16 million pounds of USDA foods in 2025—cuts that could also limit free school meals for over 2 million children if proposed funding changes are approved. Democrat & Chronicle
