- ➤ Linda Mazur and her husband Jack received a county proclamation from Executive Adam Bello for The Emilee Connection’s work raising awareness about eating disorders after their daughter Emilee’s battle, which was highlighted when Linda was named a Remarkable Woman in early March. The award was celebrated on March 18 — Emilee’s birthday, marking a personal tribute to her legacy. Rochester First
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Herbert Montgomery, 46, was convicted on Monday of second-degree murder for fatally stabbing Christopher Austin during an argument at a Mobil gas station on North Street in Rochester around 9:30 p.m. on July 26—he fled the scene but was caught the next morning. Democrat & Chronicle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Beginning April 7, the New York State Department of Transportation will close the westbound on-ramp at Exit 27 and reduce I-490 traffic over the Erie Canal and Kreag Road to one open lane. Drivers will use a zipper merge strategy—alternating turns into the lane—under conditions set by weather and project scheduling. Democrat & Chronicle
- ➤ A working paper from the Center for Public Safety Initiatives at RIT shows that traffic stops by the Rochester Police Department have dropped nearly every year since a peak in 2017—reaching 2,107 stops in 2023 and a 74 percent decline from the high. The paper notes that while fewer vehicles during COVID may have contributed, the continued decrease suggests a long-term trend and calls for improved data collection for transparency. - ➤ Community leaders and advocates held a rally outside the Monroe County Building last week to demand more help for Rochester's homeless and support the Housing Access Voucher Program.
