ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police said that on Wednesday at around 4 a.m. a woman was hit by an SUV on Winton Road near Hillside Avenue in Rochester—she was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital but died, and the incident is under investigation.  Democrat & Chronicle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Genesee Brewery, started in 1878, unveiled a $28 million can line as part of a $50 modernization project announced last May—this marks the second phase of a plan that has invested $215 million in upgrades over the past 15 years.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Philomena NyarkoDade opened Yaayah’s Kitchen at 7 E. Main St. in Victor in December to serve Afro-Fusion takeout food with dishes like jollof rice with chicken. The eatery is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Saturday catering available on advance order — her menu reflects healthy twists inspired by her Ghanaian roots — and parking is in the rear.  Democrat & Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Greece PD credited drone technology for identifying and arresting 25-year-old Jaiquan Goins after he broke into a home on Chippendale Road last week and stole items just after 3 a.m.—the suspect has a history of burglaries.  Rochester First
  • Ronnie Boswell Jr., known as Spaz, faces 81 charges in Ontario County—accused of selling firearms and drugs between Oct 1, 2024 and Jan 2 after a multi-agency investigation seized 14 firearms, 13 large-capacity magazines and about 2,600 fentanyl pills, and he is now held at Ontario County Jail.  Democrat & Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professor Nicole Sampson became provost on Feb. 1 after serving as interim provost and Dean at Stony Brook, and she will keep teaching chemistry while changing the academic budget and updating campus spaces. Her plan (using new funds to build transdisciplinary centers) aims to boost faculty research and align UR's mission with emerging standards.  Campus Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York State launched its Youre Hired campaign to recruit federal workers laid off during DOGE cuts and fill more than 7,000 state job openings; the state offers free weekly career webinars and other support to experienced public servants. Governor Hochul said the campaign has already attracted over 1,300 applications and is expanding with digital billboards (at Washington's Union Station and Moynihan Station) to highlight competitive salaries and robust labor protections.  NewsRadio WHAM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Monroe County started an Overdose Fatality Review to study overdose deaths and suggest ways to stop them—this effort is backed by a three-year, $1.6 million Justice Department grant and will bring together local experts and community members to guide future actions. The review will examine fatal cases and help local agencies plan stronger prevention measures.  Rochester Beacon
