COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Close to 500 women gathered last Thursday, Mar. 19 at the Hyatt Regency for the 8th annual Women Empowering Women Conference hosted by the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce — the event offered sessions on wellness, networking, and artificial intelligence.  ABC 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Calling hours for baby Noah Carpenter, who died from injuries in a car crash on March 5 at Buffalo and Howard Roads in Gates, will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 28 at Bartolomeo and Perotto Funeral Home in Greece; his parents were seriously injured in the incident.  Democrat & Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hundreds gathered at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Thursday as John Bonnici was installed as the 10th bishop of the diocese. Pope Leo XIV named him to succeed retiring Bishop Matano, and Bonnici vowed to serve the local church's spiritual needs.  ABC 13
  • Genesee Country Village and Museum is hosting a Maple Syrup Festival—demonstrating the prime season for syrup production—from 10 to 3 today and on March 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29.  ABC 13

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rochester’s gas prices have soared after overnight attacks on oil fields in Iran and nearby nations caused a jump from $3.05 on March 3 to $3.71 on March 19 (the fastest increase in 20 years), and experts warn further rises are likely.  News 10
  • A University of Rochester-led coalition is nearing a decision that could bring up to $160 million in federal funding for optics, photonics, imaging and laser innovation in the region, following an (NSF) site visit last month. A final decision is expected in a few months.  Rochester Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State and local officials urge Rochester families to file a return before Tax Day to claim the expanded child tax credit and help. Families with children ages 0 to 4 may get up to $1,000 per child + those with children ages 4 to 16 might receive $330 each.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Humana dropped nearly all local home care providers from its Medicare Advantage network, leaving patients to cover out-of-pocket costs and prompting concern among local hospitals and doctors. UR Medicine Home Care (one of the affected agencies) said it remains in talks with Humana to resolve this coverage issue.  News 10
  • Local group ROCovery is hosting a 24-hour run called One Mile at a Time to support recovery. The event starts at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 18 at Fellows Road Park in Fairport.  ABC 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Rochester Knighthawks will play a 'Cure Cancer' game to raise awareness and support families affected by pediatric cancer. The event will take place at Blue Cross Arena at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 21.  ABC 13
  • Pittsford gold medalist Chris Lillis held a meet-and-greet Wednesday evening at Woodcliff Hotel in Fairport — signing autographs and sharing Olympic stories from Italy. He also visited RCSD School No. 19 to encourage students and marched in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade with his medal.  News 10
