ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rochester fire officials confirmed one person died when firefighters responded to a house fire at 69 Farleigh Ave—located in the Lyell-Otis neighborhood—on Sunday night, and the fire was controlled in about 20 minutes with no other injuries as the cause is under investigation.  WXXI News

CRIME NEWS

  • 61-year-old Tyrone James — a convicted felon with 49 convictions — has been charged with second-degree murder after police say he fatally stabbed 63-year-old Myrtle Watson last fall in her apartment at 183 Sixth Street; he was arraigned Saturday morning and remains in jail with a court date set for Wednesday afternoon.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Marlon Williams—convicted last October for a deadly drive-by shooting that fatally wounded 24-year-old Shaquan Parker on Wellington Avenue on July 15th, 2022—was sentenced Monday to 40 years to life in prison.  ABC 13
  • Rochester police are investigating an incident on the southwest side as officers have set up a heavy presence around Billy’s Place—located near Adams Street and Reynolds Street.  News 10
  • A 54-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman from Rochester stole from Runnings in Sweden yesterday afternoon and led police on a chase across Monroe County before being stopped near Chili and Woodbine avenues in Rochester while a Niagara Falls man in their vehicle was also arrested for outstanding warrants.  NewsRadio WHAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • News reports detailed that the first Irish family settled in Rochester in 1817 when James Dowling bought land that now houses Genesee Brewery—once a lumber mill site where many Irish settled and worked hard on projects like the Erie Canal. Experts noted that by the end of the Civil War, Irish immigrants made up about 20% of the city's population and founded its early Catholic churches.  News 10
  • Rochester’s Museum of Play saw a 10% drop in Canadian visitors this month—about 800 fewer than last year—as Ontario schools closed for mid-winter break. Museum spokesperson Shane Rhinewald said officials are monitoring the trend closely while Visit Rochester prepares to relaunch its Canadian advertising campaign in late spring.  WXXI News

  • The New York State Department of Transportation began an almost $61,000,000 bridge replacement project on I-490 in Monroe County on March 17th. The project will replace aging bridges built in the 1950s and reduce the highway to one lane in each direction during construction—drivers are advised to allow extra travel time.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Rochester Medicine Home Care workers voted to strike for up to five days amid stalled union talks over high patient caseloads and the need for affordable health insurance — URMHC leaders said they remain committed to negotiating with the next session set for March 19th.  Democrat & Chronicle
