  • Young entrepreneurs showcased cooking, baking, photography, and apparel skills at a local marketplace on Saturday. Founder Matthew Wagstaff said the event provided a real-life chance for kids to apply business and math lessons, and the marketplace partnered with Black Men Achieve to extend its outreach.  News 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Spirit Airlines Airbus A321 carrying about 90 passengers made an emergency landing at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport Saturday morning after a pressurization issue, and no injuries were reported — the plane will be serviced locally.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Grammy Award-winning Brandi Carlile will perform at CMAC on Aug. 20 for The Human Tour with special guest I'm With Her and tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. March 20 — each sale contributing $2 to her Looking Out Foundation.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Rochester’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place Saturday, Mar. 14 — thousands gathered downtown to celebrate Irish heritage amid cool, windy conditions.  ABC 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The 22nd annual FIRST Robotics Finger Lakes Regional competition took place Saturday at RIT's Gordon Field House, featuring 56 teams from the Northeast, Canada, Hawaii, and Taipei who competed in REBUILT by tossing yellow nerf balls into scoring hubs and navigating obstacles.  ABC 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Strong winds caused widespread power outages in upstate New York yesterday. Local residents can track outage updates online and call utility companies as crews work to restore power.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • New York officials announced that a statewide burn ban will begin tomorrow to limit residential brush burning and reduce wildfire risk in warmer weather (the ban runs until May 14).  Democrat & Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials reported that this season’s flu vaccine was only 25-30% effective in adults and 40% effective in children, marking the lowest rate in over a decade. The CDC noted high flu rates in the Finger Lakes since Oct. 1.  News 10

  • Yesterday, Pittsford faced Suffern in the state hockey Division I semifinal at HarborCenter in downtown Buffalo as the Panthers needed two wins to capture their first state title. The teams entered with records of 19 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties & 18 wins, 5 losses, and 1 tie, respectively.  Democrat & Chronicle
