COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In Irondequoit, local nonprofit RocMaidan held a prayer Saturday, Feb. 21 to remember victims of the Ukraine war as the four-year anniversary of the invasion nears. The group shipped its 30th container of donated supplies last week.  ABC 13
  • Nearly 900 athletes competed in the Special Olympics New York State Winter Games on Saturday in the Finger Lakes region. Free health screenings were provided at the Riverside Convention Center in Rochester and the closing ceremony with medal presentations took place at 7 p.m.  News 10
  • Community members gathered in prayer at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church for a candlelight vigil ahead of the four-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Irene Lyko Smith of RocMaidan noted that the event reflected deep faith as volunteers continue shipping aid.  News 10

  • Fresh off the 2026 Winter Olympics, skating stars including Ilia Malinin, Alysa Liu, Chock & Bates and Jason Brown will perform at Blue Cross Arena on May 5 at 7 p.m. in Rochester.  News 10

  • Trader Joe’s recalled its ready-to-eat chicken fried rice after possible glass was found in 20-ounce bags & local shoppers are urged to check their freezers and return or dispose of the product. The advisory comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  Democrat & Chronicle

  • Irondequoit hockey beat Webster Thomas in overtime thanks to Dylan Carey's game-winning goal + his cheerful post-goal remarks. The win highlighted the team's strong play and teamwork during the match.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Section V hockey playoffs saw Class A and Class B teams test their skills in games between Feb. 17 and Feb. 21 — tight contests included overtime wins and strong team defenses that set up the next rounds. Updated scores remain available through local media.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Chris Lillis, a Pittsford native, helped the U.S. team defend its gold medal in mixed team aerials at the Olympics on Feb. 21 at Livigno Aerials and Moguls Park in Italy + he delivered a standout landing for his second Olympic gold.  Democrat & Chronicle
