COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Registration is open for this spring’s Day of Caring—the largest single-day volunteering event in the region—on Thursday, May 21. Nonprofits must register before March 2 and order t-shirts for volunteers by May 7 to ensure project readiness, according to the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes.  News 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Triphammer Bierworks will close its Fairport location on Feb. 28 after nearly 10 years of serving local craft beer. Founder Scott Denhart said the lease expires and lower beer demand have led to the planned closure amid a regional trend of craft brewery shutdowns.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Raising Cane's is proposing its first local restaurant at 823 Jefferson Road (located between Panera and Shame Shack), confirmed by Henrietta Town Supervisor Steve Schultz. The town will hold a public hearing on March 18 and, if approved, construction could start as early as May.  News 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Temple Sinai hosted 'Hope for Peace: Interfaith Dialogue With Spirit of the Galilee Leaders' (Feb. 10) to encourage dialogue among Jewish and Arab communities. Leaders from Israel engaged in shared singing in Hebrew and Arabic and took part in a moderated question session.  ABC 13

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GRE’s 2025 report showed it facilitated 143 new projects and managed 281 business attraction and expansion projects in nine counties. The report highlights technology and food and beverage processing as key growth sectors, with over $6.7 billion secured in new capital investments that supported significant job growth.  Rochester Beacon

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After more than two weeks of freezing temperatures, Rochester experienced a day above freezing though heavy snowfall still covers driveways. Local contractor David Christofano and his team cleared 150 driveways in six hours & warn that if snow continues to build, extra help may be needed.  News 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Council President Miguel Meléndez recommended completing Peace Village shelters, since the modular units bought in 2023 remain in storage and would replace unsafe encampments for people experiencing homelessness. The city will seek funds from opioid settlement money and federal pandemic relief as planning continues.  WXXI News
  • Youth ages 14 to 20 can apply for paid summer jobs in Rochester & Monroe County through the ROC Youth Employment Network, which teams with RochesterWorks to offer six weeks of work experience. Applicants must submit required documents digitally by April 17.  Democrat & Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Section V alpine skiing championships were held Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Bristol Mountain Ski Resort, where Hudson Proia McQuaid won the boys' giant slalom with a combined time of 2:00.48 and Keegan Jacob of Pittsford finished second.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • The Buffalo Bills opened the NFL season as a co-favorite to win the AFC with both they and the Baltimore Ravens at +550 odds, placing them ahead of the Patriots at +750. Analysts note this strong position follows last season’s postseason loss.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Ontario County native Dylan Walczyk advanced to the moguls finals at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Livigno, Italy after finishing seventh in Tuesday's preliminary run — he will compete in additional qualifying rounds on Thursday morning at 6:10 a.m.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and the Rochester Red Wings announced that Frontier Field is set to be renamed ESL Ballpark, pending approval from the Monroe County Legislature. The name change will debut with the Red Wings' home opener on Tuesday, March 31 at 4:05 p.m. against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.  ABC 13
