COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mayor Evans hosted the third annual Madden Invitational E-Sports Tournament at the library on South Avenue Saturday, Feb. 7 to boost teamwork and communication among local kids as part of his effort to expand E-Sports opportunities citywide.  ABC 13
  • The Puppy Bowl will air on Sunday featuring 150 dogs from 72 shelters, including 10 from upstate New York, and was filmed in October at an arena in Glens Falls to boost shelter dog adoptions with local teams called Team Fluff + Team Ruff.  Spectrum News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A two-alarm fire on Sunday displaced residents of two apartments at Chili Gardens in Gates near 1:00 p.m., with firefighters evacuating all eleven units and reporting no injuries while investigating the cause.  ABC 13
  • A small fire on Oakman Street displaced several residents last Saturday, Feb. 7, when firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze after a neighbor's 911 call; no injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rochester is set to host its third annual Galentine's Day event on Feb. 13 – nearly 300 participants will enjoy brunch, shopping and support from women run vendors, offering a fun celebration of friendship ahead of Valentine's Day.  Spectrum News
  • For a memorable Valentine’s Day, various Finger Lakes wineries host special tastings and pairings, including live demonstrations and themed events. Experiences run from Feb. 13 through Feb. 22 across Keuka, Seneca, and nearby lakes, offering local wine lovers a unique way to celebrate romance.  Democrat & Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from the Harley School learned filmmaking techniques such as script writing and editing during a student filmmaking weekend guided by filmmaker James Kennedy on Sunday – the event ended with a final screening on campus in Brighton.  ABC 13
  • Mayor Malik Evans and County Executive Adam Bello will announce the ROC Youth Employment Network’s application period today, which offers six to eight weeks of paid internships for youth (14 to 20). The program will support local teens in gaining valuable work experience.  News 10
  • Students at The Harley School in Brighton adapted Newbery Award-winning books into short films during the 90-Second Film Festival on Sunday, gaining hands-on experience in film work. Their films will be shown in Rochester at the George Eastman Museum on Saturday, April 25.  News 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, the portion of Saint Paul Street between Ward Street and Central Avenue will be reduced to one lane as the southbound lane closes for underpass work; the closure is expected to last through the end of the month.  News 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • URMC at Strong Memorial Hospital celebrated 25 years since its first heart transplant on Friday, Feb. 6. Since 2001, over 400 patients have received new hearts — the event featured CPR and AED demonstrations by the American Heart Association.  ABC 13

  • Ontario County native Dylan Walczyk, a Bristol Mountain alum, will compete for Team USA in men's moguls and dual moguls at Milano Cortina 2026, with his first race set for Tuesday in Livigno (he aims to build on his past Olympic experience).  Democrat & Chronicle
