  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace opened a new hub in Batavia in November to deliver free beds for children in need — volunteers now deliver 24 beds monthly while 2,000 children in Rochester, 800 in Buffalo and 500 in Syracuse await online applications.  Spectrum News
  • Residents at Venue II in Brighton dealt with a four-day water outage that began Monday mid-afternoon due to burst pipes from extreme cold. Water was restored late Thursday and repairs will cause another shutoff tomorrow.  News 10
  • The 39th Annual Greater Rochester Boat Show is underway at Riverside Convention Center from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1 — visitors can see fishing boats, jet skis and sports boats on display.  ABC 13
  • A symposium celebrating the legacy of late Gene DePrez is scheduled to revisit the ideas behind the Rochester Urbanarium to spur resident engagement with local government. WXXI’s (Connections with Evan Dawson) program previewed the upcoming event on Jan. 28.  WXXI News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • FIFCO USA is modernizing its Rochester plant to brew beer and flavored malt beverages using new investments including a $28-million canning line. The brewery is boosting contract partnerships with brands like Happy Dad Seltzer to offset slower off-premise sales in a shrinking market.  Rochester Beacon

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local musician Que Mosley will perform at Water Street Music Hall on Jan. 31 from 7 to 11 p.m.—the MTV-featured artist returns home with his band to entertain his fans.  ABC 13

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rochester residents will see higher utility bills this month as RG&E passes on increased costs caused by a colder-than-normal winter (240 heating degree days above normal). The company has introduced usage alerts and assistance programs for households needing help managing expenses.  News 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Parks announced a $75 million project to upgrade High Falls park, starting with renovations at Terrace Park and new lighting (similar to that at Niagara Falls); work is expected to begin this year with phase one finishing in three to four years.  WXXI News
  • RMAPI (Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative) has set its 2026 goals to break poverty and boost affordable housing and wages. The group is hosting a legislative breakfast today from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at REOC with local leaders to share its new policy agenda.  News 10
  • New York’s state has increased the child tax credit from $330 to $1,000 for children under 4 as part of efforts to cut child poverty locally. Advocates worry that federal SNAP cuts may raise food insecurity risks - action on related measures is still pending.  WXXI News
  • Mayor Malik D. Evans announced an RFP for redevelopment of 151 Mt. Hope Avenue, a 1.88-acre waterfront site in the Erie Harbor district supported by over $100 million in public investment through ROC the Riverway, with proposals due by April 13.  City of Rochester
