BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Fried Fish Shack (corner of Joseph Avenue and Eiffel Place) announced its closing on Jan. 23 due to unforeseen medical and financial difficulties, owner Mark Flagg said. The popular spot had brought community members together since opening in 2021.  Democrat & Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra launched a two-week dance festival at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, featuring local choreographers from Garth Fagan Dance & Rochester City Ballet. The festival kicked off Friday and offers a show today at 7:30 p.m. with final performances scheduled next weekend.  News 10
  • Rochester-based Kodak listed Oscar-nominated films shot on its film as nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were announced; 'Sinners' earned 16 nods while 'One Battle After Another' received 13. The awards ceremony will take place on March 15 with Conan O’Brien hosting.  News 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Zachary Arnez from Flower City School 54 was nominated for National Life Group’s 2025-26 LifeChanger of the Year award for his work with students. If he wins, he will share a $20,000 prize with his school.  ABC 13
  • The RCSD chief financial officer, Robert McDowell, explained on Thursday night that tax forms mailed to about 200 staff members had inaccuracies in pre-tax deduction details and expects corrected forms to be sent out by Monday during the week.  News 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Hochul and local officials unveiled a $20M pilot program in Monroe County at the Irene Skalny Childcare Center (located at the Eastside Family YMCA in Penfield) to expand universal child care and serve children under five by the 2028-29 school year.  ABC 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rochester athletes were named Section V Athletes of the Week presented by Faber Builders for January 12–18; Webster Schroeder’s Jenna Swick earned over 4,000 votes for an 18‑foot long jump at Nazareth University while Williamson’s Ben Burns received over 15,000 votes for his record 600‑meter time at the Jack Reed Showcase Classic.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Nearly 46,000 Bills fans signed a petition asking for coach Sean McDermott's reinstatement after his recent firing; they want the team's management to reverse its decision made at a press conference.  Democrat & Chronicle
