COMMUNITY NEWS

  • House of Mercy’s outreach team is working four to five days a week to shield vulnerable people from the cold as heavy snow falls, providing hygiene kits, water, gloves and sleeping bags while coordinating with the Rochester Police Department. They continue to offer critical support amid worsening winter weather.  News 10
  • On Monday, several city offices (City Hall, animal services, libraries) will close for MLK Day while ice rinks remain open; the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park Ice Rink hosts free skating for canned food or hygiene donations and recycling collection is delayed by one day.  News 10
  • Camp Good Days flew children with cancer from Rochester on a five-day adventure to Orlando. The group left January 1 to explore Universal Studios and Disney World, thanks to funds raised at *Teddi Dance for Love* at St. John Fisher University.  News 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Jan. 15, Forbes released its Most Trusted Companies in America list, and Wegmans Food Markets in Rochester ranked No. 20 among 300 top companies. The study evaluated over 1,500 firms (both public and private) using key performance measures.  Democrat & Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Geva Theatre presents The Woman in Black, a classic gothic two-hander running at Wilson Stage until Feb. 8. Actors David Acton + Ben Porter offer insights on the production.  ABC 13
  • Genesee Brewery, the oldest continually operating brewery in the area, was founded in 1878 and reopened in 1933 after prohibition. Its legacy lives on with the Genesee Brew House and holiday keg tree lighting, and it will mark its 150th birthday in 2028.  ABC 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rochester-area school officials follow Monroe County Department of Public Health guidelines that advise closing classes when wind chills near -25 degrees + they also consider factors like walking distances and bus wait times to protect students from frostbite.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Thirty students began Nazareth University's new Physician Assistant Master of Science program on Thursday, Jan. 15 at its Pittsford campus. The hybrid program combines online learning with on-site clinical practice to meet Rochester’s growing healthcare needs.  ABC 13

  • NY officials said cleanup is underway at Carlson Park — home to Radio Social and Comedy Central — after contamination from an old Stromberg plant was detected.  Democrat & Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rochester recycling pickup is delayed by one day due to inclement weather & city officials advise residents to check local updates for the revised schedule.  City of Rochester
  • Crews from Greece DPW cleared snow Thursday morning and continued through the afternoon in Greece, working three shifts with 500 miles of plow and salt to secure roads while asking drivers to stay 100 feet behind trucks (according to DPW Commissioner Cory Gurnett).  ABC 13

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Genesee Brewery has brought back its fan-favorite Dry Hopped Cream Ale after five years and it is now available at the Brew House and select retail shelves. The limited release offers beer lovers a renewed taste—this crowd-pleaser may lead to more seasonal varieties soon.  Democrat & Chronicle

  • Sadie Gursslin and Brock Bigsby earned Section V Athletes of the Week honors from Faber Builders after receiving over 17,000 and 15,000 votes for their performances during Jan. 5–11.
