About this event

The Hologram as a Scene. Basics of Computer Generated Holography and the Rise of Gaussian Splatting

Holographic displays reconstruct Three Dimensional (3D) scenes by modulating light with computer generated interference patterns, a technique known as Computer Generated Holography (CGH). In this talk, I give a guided tour of the field. It starts from the fundamentals of hologram formation, light propagation, and optimization based generation of phase only and double phase holograms. It then follows the recent movement in which holograms are treated as scenes to be learned from data. I describe how our group represents holograms with Gaussian primitives, including complex valued 2D/3D Gaussians, quadratic phase Gaussians, and Holographic Radiance Fields, and how this viewpoint connects hologram generation with hologram compression. I also introduce learned light transport on the focal surface, and multi color driving schemes that improve the brightness of holographic displays. Throughout the talk, I connect these computational tools to the goals of practical, real time holographic displays, and I close with open problems and recent results from our laboratory.

The Voices of XR speaker series is presented by the Center for eXtended Reality , in partnership with Mary Ann Mavrinac Studio X , University Libraries. This series is made possible by Kathy McMorran Murray .
